Stefanos Polyzoides, Fellow
1998 Seaside Prize Winner

Stefanos Polyzoides is one of the founders of the Congress for the New Urbanism and a principal of Moule & Polyzoides, Architects and Urbanists, in Pasadena, Calif. 

Polyzoides was born in Athens, Greece received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture from Princeton University, and has lived in Southern California since 1973. He is a registered architect in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and Texas. Polyzoides has worked on the practice, theory and education of architecture and urbanism for 30 years. 

His projects have included institutional and civic buildings, historic rehabilitation, commercial projects, housing, campus planning, and urban design. As an advocate for sustainable development, Moule & Polyzoides has recently produced a variety of exemplary green buildings for university and institutional clients and is in the forefront of new urbanist greenfield and brownfield design in the United States.

In 2020, Polyzoides was appointed the Francis and Kathleen Rooney Dean of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture. He is a professor emeritus of architecture at the University of Southern California and has been a visiting professor at several other schools, including Princeton University. He has written extensively in both book and article form and ha been featured in both national and international journals. He is the author of two books, Los Angeles Courtyard Housing: A Typological Analysis and R.M. Schindler, Architect. In addition, his research has produced four distinguished exhibitions and exhibition catalogs: “Caltech: 1910-1950,” “Myron Hunt: 1868-1952,” “Wallace Neff,” and “Johnson, Kaufmann & Coate.”

With his partner, Liz Moule, and Hank Dittmar, he is the coauthor of the “Canons of Sustainable Development,” an addendum to the Charter of the New Urbanism.
